The image obligation comes

7 Apr 2022

From February 2023, product images are a must

While images were previously considered "nice-to-have", they will become a must-have from February 2023. This means that data exchange with at least one product image will become mandatory for data providers.

Initially, the requirement only applies to new products from the food, near-food, non-food and DIY sectors whose data is sent from A to B in the German target market. For each GTIN, data providers must provide at least one product image via the GDSN, otherwise the master data will neither be displayed nor sent to the data recipients from February 2023. Sounds strict, but it is a great advantage for everyone.

"Both retailers and consumers increasingly demand valid information in real time. Digital solutions are required everywhere"
(Thomas Fell, Lead GS1 Germany, 17.03.2022)

More data. More customers. More turnover.

Those who present and stage their products optimally have both the trade and the consumer on their side. This leads to improved customer loyalty, increases turnover and, thanks to complete product information, sets the course for long-lasting trade partnerships.

"The demands on data quality continue to rise due to increasing product diversity, growing e-commerce as well as regulations by the legislator."
(Thomas Fell, Lead GS1 Germany, 17.03.2022)

Missing image data can now be a direct exclusion criterion in the world of e-commerce: understandably so. After all, who wants to buy a pig in a poke when there is the option of digital assets? Besides product images in various perspectives, digital assets also include audio files, certificates, videos, advertising materials, safety data sheets and scientific documents. All these files are managed with just a few clicks via a digital asset management system and centrally entered in the GDSN. Trading partners can use this to access the assets directly and use the entire data package for all publications and sales channels.

We have summarised details on digital installations for you in our Guide "The golden rules for good product illustrations". for you. We will also be publishing a supplementary, technical guide shortly, in which we will go into more detail on the specifications regarding file names.

All requirements are also comprehensively documented in the "Application recommendation for the creation of product images and media assets for strategic brand management and successful content marketing." section of GS1 Germany .
