"The industry is calling on the French healthcare sector to introduce the GDSN"

Medical device manufacturers support the use of GS1 standards (GDSN) as an optimal process to exchange trusted product content with trading partners (e.g. group purchasing organizations (GPOs) and hospitals). This is confirmed by members of the Healthcare GDSN User Group organized by atrify. Thanks to specific validations developed and approved by the French community as part of a working group within GS1 France composed of manufacturers, trading partners and solution providers, the GDSN ensures the data quality that is paramount to improving patient safety while reducing supply chain costs (e.g. storage and distribution costs, order-to-pay procedures) and enabling eTenders.

The 2019 French data model for the GDSN is consistent with the use of GS1 standards for UDI as well as compliance with UDI regulations worldwide. It is also consistent with, but not limited to, GDSN projects implemented worldwide (including many other European countries) by healthcare communities such as Germany, the UK, Switzerland, Belgium and the US.

Some pioneer GPOs such as RESAH and GAM have already started implementing the GDSN in France. As the GDSN continues to expand, more French hospitals and GPOs will in turn benefit from vendors' efforts to implement IT solutions and MDM processes that ensure quality data is made available to the community. This adoption will also be facilitated by the GDSN User Guide for Healthcare, which will be developed under the auspices of GS1 France in 2020.

Using GS1 standards will definitely improve product content exchange processes and data quality compared to using proprietary solutions of Excel spreadsheets, PDF documents, emails and manual portals designed specifically for individual trading partners. For this reason, manufacturers are encouraging their trading partners to utilize the GDSN to help improve patient safety and reduce costs.
